Colectivos, the taxi buses Latin America

One type of semi-public transport we do not know in Europe, the Collective, These are taxis throughout the day as a bus driving the same route, but everywhere on this route stops where people stop him by show of hands.

This goes so long until the taxi is full, which means that you are practically with strangers sharing a taxi. The price is a fixed price per ride, no matter which route or line is selected. The Colectivo is seen in price between a bus ticket and a taxi ride.

In a small town there depending on size about 20 lines, which are reported to the roof of the Colectivo.

The advantage is that the frequencies are much higher than the buses and that you do not have to go to the bus stop. Environmentally friendly, the whole is not, but still better than alone to drive their own car.

Here colectivos are in Chile certainly very popular and almost always full, even us it was fun to share this transport with the locals!

Essen in Chile

The food in the south of Chile consists of many fish dishes, as there is little pasture for cows etc.

Der Apertitiv

In restaurants is usually served with bread butter and advance a Chilean specialty. It is the Pebre: chopped tomatoes and onions, which are flavored with coriander, lemon juice, oil, parsley and green chili.

To do this, then ordered the typical aperitif, the Pisco Sour, a mix of pisco and lemon juice, very delicious! Or in the south to Calafate Sour, which is made with the juice of this fruit shrub.

The fish, mainly hake, salmon, Congrio (Conger) etc. and you can as fried or fried with mushroom or Paprikasouce and various side dishes such as mashed potatoes, or rice croquettes between different cooking methods. Our favorite is the fish with cream Paprikasouce tasted, here called "a la vasca", this must be said that we have only learned to write the article that Congrio eel !! The waiter had in fact sold to us as white fish!

There are also many other seafood such as clams, shrimp and king crab that can be had by European standards to relatively normal to low prices.

Of course, our classic from raw fish, the ceviche should not be missed!

Avocados Süss und

Definitely worth mentioning are the avocado, which is here called locally Paltas with the great variety Palta hatred. Nowhere else have I eaten so delicious avocados, which are found mostly in Chile in all salads.

In general, the Chileans like to eat sweet, sometimes for dinner cake. Here certainly have had their fingers in the pie German immigrants. Very loved here is the Manjar, which is included in other parts of South America Dulce de leche, a sort of caramelized milk which is spread between two cookies or simply smeared on bread.

So, as you see, is not starved in Chile! Let's see what my world tour yet so brings culinary with it! And never forget: scratching ifs forward and bites back, take monastery Melissengeist! 😉

Puerto Montt Puerto Varas und

On the same day that we arrived by ferry, we spent a day in Puerto Montt, which resembles a größenen fishing village.

The fish market of Angelmo

We explored the district Angelmo with its fish market that really offers a lot of choice is a secret. Here, the crabs and clams quite different dimensions than anywhere else.

For one, there are dried fish and seafood, which do not sooo meets my taste, merely by virtue of the stench.

But it is hardly anywhere such a large variety of as salmon, eel, Shripms udgl. The advantage is that you can then directly above upon it in the market building is outstanding restaurants, then buy as ordered and due to the small kitchens each fresh fish!

But also not to have as my case here, too, the fresh sea urchins that are currently excluded here.

Right next door is then conveniently the wholesale market for potato umd onion.

However you should rethink the renewal of the current installation ... ..

Puerto Varas overlooking the Osorno

Only 20 minutes by bus from Puerto Montt, the landscape changes completely and you are right in the sea area surrounded by volcanoes. The most famous village here is Puerto Varas which is equipped with all the services that the tourist heart desires.

Really gorgeous and actually almost too perfect is the view of the 2660 meter high volcano Osorno, which can be overcome only by persons with Eisklettererfahrung.

Although Puerto Montt and Puerto Varas was only necessary Zwischnstopps on our journey further north of Argentina, we have used well the day here and seen a lot. Here it was called then for us "Adios Chile", or rather "Hasta luego" because this beautiful country with its very kind and friendly people is worth the trip again and again!

The Navimag ferry

Here's the report from the well teuesten ferry in the world ...
As in southern Chile no road is available in the section of the fjords, one has to overcome three options the north / south route: the first by plane from Punta Arenas to Puerto Montt (about 120 euros one way), the second in a 36 hour bus ride with overnight stop on the bumpy Ruta 40 in Argentina or even at sea with the only ferry company Navimag.

navimag

The waterway is described by many travelers as einamliges experience, but should think twice on how to spend their travel budget ... here.

The booking of the ferry Navimag

The whole story began in October as we were told that the ferry was discontinued for the time being, because the ship had to be changed.

puerto Natales

Now we had already made our alternative plan, but then looked on the ground in Puerto Natales but in the past Navimag office, where you then told us that it but next week would then give the first ride on the new ferry north.

Black-necked swans

The choice was between four categories of cabins, double rooms in outside cabin with bathroom, double room in inside cabin with bathroom, double rooms with shared bathroom and triple in inside cabin with shared bathroom. We chose the last and cheapest version and paid 460 USD, 330 EUR for it. Included were 3 times breakfast, 2 lunches and 3 dinners provided.

The food and the crew on board

The food was as settled in the military in Selbstbediehnungmodus and the taste of the food can probably be classified at this level. 😉 Well, the main courses especially the vegetarian version was yes, though not very varied but at least taste good, the soups were ok. The gray color of the minced meat saw at least not sooo appetizing.

The salad consisted of a few snippets of green salad and then four to five pieces of cauliflower or roote beds each. The dessert was either jelly, a piece of fruit or canned fruit.

cafeteria navimag

On board was a coordinator and a guide, the latter was introduced at the beginning and again seen only once when I asked him after the arrival and he had no idea.

On the first day as we drove through the fjords it has almost constantly raining so we only saw a few hills gray. When, on the second day the sun was shining, we headed out to the open sea and never returned to the fjords (explanation to follow shortly).

Fjorde chile

Entertainment except there was a bingo evening on the last day none, but oh, I forgot the TV room, where locals have bought a cheap seat and have held up their luggage with the kids themselves. In addition, a documentary from Somalia was shown. Thus, if you decide to Navimag ferry, it is recommended reading materials meet here to have Wi-Fi there is not of course.

The transport ship Eden

The ship itself is to say that, while previously know that there is a freight ship and thus are also animals such as cows or horses on board, but we thought but actually that the ship should be new. ...

cows Navimag

bridge Navimag

On the desolate Sanitary you could find out very quickly that this freighter already had a few years back.

bad navimag

shower ferry Navimag

If you have nice weather and enjoy the view of the fjords and if one is satisfied with the relatively cheap triple cabin, the Navimag ferry may well be an acceptable option, but since you're paying for a double outside cabin with bathroom 1500 USD PER PERSON, would I prefer to make this a Caribbean luxury cruise ...

Nationalpark Pali Aike

This National Parks located about 2.5 hours north of Punta Arenas and is accessible by day trip. Pali Aike literally means Devil's Country, which is due to the numerous volcanoes in the area. Here you walk in the lava fields directly on the Argentine border.

One can almost 3 different ways to visit the park: A multi-day hike for which you have to take camping gear and supplies themselves, an all-day hike from a total of 8 hours or a guided day tour in a minivan with which one can enjoy sightseeing panoramic views of the massif from all directions. We chose here the most comfortable option and did not regret it!
