Costs

A Round the World Trip is of course not cheap. Depending on your budget you can adjust the route. It is not all that difficult to estimate the total cost but it is very important to have some extra money - just in case…..

As an experienced traveller, especially as a backpacker, I am now able to estimate what you spend per day on food, lodging, transport, entrance fees etc and what the additional costs might be for tours or excursions (such as diving). It varies of course, depending on the country and Lonely Planet gives us estimations for backpackers, medium budget and luxury travelers.

I am used to staying in hotels and to eat local food. I eat food freshly prepared on the street markets and avoid organised tours, especially the longer trips. I organise them myself if possible. Inland flights can be pricy too so I take night trains or buses in order to save on accommodation.

Here an overview of the estimated costs per day and additional expenditure:

world trip costs

Included in the costs for the flights is the Round-the-World ticket as well as some inland flights. Scuba diving is a very expensive hobby and you have to calculate at least $100 for 2 dives per day which includes hiring the equipment.

Additional costs

You cannot ignore the costs that incur before departure. These include expenditure for vaccinations, travel insurance, visas, guide books (Lonely Planet in my case) and items such as Trekkingrucksack, Olympus Tough underwater camera, hiking bootscamera equipment, in my case an Olympus PEN with my 14-150 mm lens and my Olympus Tough underwater camera etc.

Because of previous travels, I had all the vaccinations required and only needed to buy Malarone malaria tablets which I bought from the Spanish Ministry of Health on prescription for only 2.40 Euros, a bargain, considering that for my first big trip to Southeast Asia, I spent 80 Euros on them. I do not have to pay for any visa except for Myanmar and Indonesia. The highest cost is the travel insurance for 12 months at Roundtheworldflights which costs 450 Euros and includes high risk associated with adventures sports such as diving.
