Taupo – Huka Falls Mountainbiking

Taupo, Biking Paradise

Taupo is traded as an adventure capital of New Zealand in addition to Queenstown. Here you will find every day countless Sky Dives, bungy jumps instead etc. I opted for the unspectacular activity, cycling 😉 Anyway, I thought that it would be spectacular ....

World Travel mountainbike

Located right between Lake Taupo and the Waikato River, the resort is perfect for cycling! Right now in autumn with the different colored trees and pleasant temperatures this little place is a hidden gem in the North Island.

On the way there we drove to the walkway along the river along and they went back on the mountain bike route, the one reminiscent of Jurassic Park as a bit 😉 You had here at the narrow very hilly gravel pretty watched not astray. And thank God we did not have two-way traffic!

At one end of the track are the Huka Falls, where 140,000 liters of water per second down fall. In bright weather is nice (albeit with storm clouds in the background), the blues are really very clean and the water crystal clear.

The Royals Kate and William in Auckland

The Royals Kate and William on Travel

A few days before my flight to Australia I now spent a weekend in Auckland, the largest city in New Zealand. Although I knew that Kate and William will be in New Zealand, I was not informed which route the two have chosen for their holidays.

But when I am with my roommate taking a walk to the harbor approached, we soon realized that because of the crowds, the British flag and the helicopters flying overhead, the Royals will probably not be far away ....

Auckland habour royals

In short, we spoke to a policeman, who kindly provided the further course told us: Kate and William were probably just gone out on sailing ships in the bay and would come back in about 1 hour.

After a coffee break we went so then back to the scene.

The official reception we had probably already missed, so few onlookers were only on the road, yet there were still some die-hard fans!

As a stocky built Mitteleuropäerin I realized that Kate really has about half the hip measurement of me ....

Even as a non-Royalfan it was quite interesting to see in any case they are! Finally, they greeted us too cute! In this sense: Bye Kate, bye William! Although who wanted but even now to Australia, right? 😉

Tongariro Alpine Crossing

Tongariro Alpine Crossing

My most recent hike in the context of my world tour in New Zealand was designated by many as the most beautiful day hike in the world Tongariro Alpine Crossing.

World Travel tongarito crossing

Again, I was very lucky with the weather, so the day before I had a very nice view of the undemanding mountain massif in Tongariro National Park.

Tongariro national park

Already around 7:15 I started with the 20-km walk that normally takes up 5.5 to 8 hours. The first section is relatively flat, but then you have good two hours very steep climb ahead. Then again, there are flat sections between the volcanoes, in a landscape that is a mixture between the moon and the desert.

landscape synthesizer

Star of the whole hike is Mt Ngauruhoe, a perfectly shaped active volcano that as Mt Doom was made famous in Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings".

Mt ngauruhoe

Krater Ngauruhoe

The next highlight was the Red Crater, of the Black offers a unique play of colors with its mix of reds.

Although one is very much taken at this point of the hike, I compensated the views of the Emerald Lakes for it. Around the lake there are still places where regular sulfur vapor rises to the surface.

Even the lava field of the last outbreak is impressive and holds one of this as quickly as possible to move on, since there are active volcanoes 😉

Then I finally arrived where it then only went downhill and I had a beautiful view of the Lake and the surrounding Rotoaira sulfur fields.

But the hike was not over yet! Eternally Long serpentine were to blame, that the descent really seemed endless!

Tongariro crossing wanderweg

Although the scenery was very impressive, I would not say that it is the most beautiful day hike in the world, perhaps the most beautiful of New Zealand, because although I have almost no made a hike in the Austrian Alps with green meadows and forests is safe varied 😉

Picton – Fähre – Wellington

Picton – Fähre – Wellington

The small town of Picton is actually known as a ferry town, virtually the gateway to the North Island of New Zealand, directly in the capital Wellington. But she has much more to offer! It is also the starting point for several days deen Queen Charlotte Track, which can be covered on foot by bike or by kayak.

picton trail

That had to be my booked tour due to low number of companies part off, I had honestly actually all located due to the prevailing Übermüdungsgefühle! Instead I made from Picton directly from a half-day hike and saved me so also the overpriced boat transfer to the track.

Queen charlotte track

So it went in the sunshine good two hours with views of the Queen Charlotte Sound ahead to the actual viewpoint.

The next day we went on quite modest Weather by ferry through the same islets through to Wellington, where the weather was better then the same again. Sometimes dolphins are here at the crossing sighted, this time I had no luck ..

Picton nach wellington

Wellington is the capital of New Zealand and my first destination on the North Island. Especially in the city center you notice immediately that people are attracted here much more elegant than on the more rural South Island. The cityscape is dominated by the harbor, some high-rise buildings and countless coffee houses.

A good view of the entire city which is spread over several hills do you get when you go up the cog railway to the Botanical Garden continues.

The second target of every visit to Wellington should be the multi-storey museum, Te Papa, in which the highlight is the issued Maori art.

In Wellington I especially enjoyed the Hafenpromende and coffee houses, a small but nice city and connecting point between North and South Island also offers everything the shopping heart desires!

This National Park is the smallest and most visited New Zealand. The 51 km hike is one of nine Great Walks in Neuseeland.

Since I've already taken one of these walks behind me, the Milford TrackI thought to myself that it is sufficient if I make only a portion of 3-5 days Walks 😉

Like everything else in New Zealand, everything is very well organized here and it offered a lot of possibilities. The Shuttelboote create very many sections and you can select as many nights you want to spend in the cottages or at the campsites.

So it went with the boat past the apple rocks up in the Anchorage Bay. Walking back to Marahau there are scarce then 13 km, but which really do not seem very far due to the insanely beautiful landscape.

The colors of the crystal clear water harmonize really well with those of the trees, especially now in the fall. In most locations, this section has a view of the island Adele. There are always at the very well-marked path branches to beaches where you can at least enjoy a picnic at the now already rather cooler water temperatures.

Always impressive is also the flora of New Zealand, especially good, I like the giant ferns.

Kaikoura & Swim with the dolphins Black

Kaikoura & Dolphin Swimming

The small town of Kaikoura is one of the few in the world where you can swim with dolphins in the open sea and I wanted my course on my world trip not to be missed!

The unique location of Kaikoura on the South Island of New Zealand is the reason for the extraordinary advent of marine life. Very close to the coast, there are in fact a very deep underwater trench in the even flow together a cold current from the Antarctic with a warm from the north and therefore sufficient food for many animals such as Whales, seals, albatrosses and dolphins offers.

Die Firma Dolfin Encounter has almost a monopoly on the swimming tour with the Black dolphins 3 times a day takes place in the warmer months. Although all the fun with 100 Euro is not exactly a bargain and the 16 degree water temperature not invite to swim, I did not want to miss this opportunity!

So we went to seeking out equipment (extra thick wetsuit) and the introduction and safety video on the boat. I was on the smaller boat, as I had indicated that I normally would not get seasick, more on the consequences that later .... 😉

Since there already is autumn here in New Zealand, the temperatures drop, the underwater visibility is poor and the waves stronger. After about 20 minutes boat ride over hill and dale, we then found a group of dolphins, so we went into the freezing water!

Advance was explained to us that we should actively swim up to the dolphins, are trying to make about the snorkel sounds to make them curious and when we have eye contact, we should on its own axis turn to play with them.

No sooner said than done! While the other fellow Wimmer were still struggling with the snorkeling gear and the waves, finally my swimming training paid off at home and so it was not long before I attracted with your comic snorkel sounds a pinball.

But even if one is then driven off in the water, swam past the Dolphins, but easy to make fast to a good one! So I had to repeat several times to the sweet little animals to come near the turning maneuver!

Schwarzdelfin kaikoura

After about half an hour in the freezing water I had enough and went back on board and was glad to get out of my wetsuit!

Dusky dolphin

So I grabbed my train and walked to the front of me to move and be as far as possible away from the seasick. With all the noise and the smell I had mitgebrochen prefer just down 😉

Well that ends well, I was one of three passengers (of 13!) Have taken the not the orange bucket in claim and took the cocoa and biscuits on board to complete!

The poor guide (first I thought what a dream job) did not occur after the emptying of the bucket and at the end we were all pretty happy to have solid ground under your feet! It was definitely a unique experience but on my trip around the world that I would want to miss on any case!

I had to explore these days time the Kaikoura Peninsula with views of the surrounding Seaward Kaikoura Range, the snow-covered mountain range. On a 4 hours tour of the coast you can except the lazy seals lying around on the beach just enjoy the enchanting landscape.

The contrast of the blue sea with the green meadows are impressive especially in warmer weather so Kaikoura definitely should be a fixed point on every trip to New Zealand!

Christchurch

Christchurch - Life after the earthquake

The second largest city in New Zealand, Christchurch had to cope with some setbacks in recent years. On September 4, shook the earth for the first time, 7.1 on the Richter scale. At that time there was no loss of life since the earthquake occurred at night.

But only a few months later, on 22 February 2011, a second strong quake occurred, this time for lunch. The epicenter was closer to the city center and debris as well as people were downright geschleutert through the air. This time, there were 185 fatalities. Since then there have been countless smaller quakes.

Building a stüzten and also the Cathedral was badly damaged.

Since is no longer what it once was. When I arrived by bus in Christchurch, I thought at first that we drive through an industrial area would be where there are some restaurants closed and is built very much. But we were right in the center!

Downtown Christchurch

Leiden, the buildings were built here not withstand earthquakes, so many buildings were closed because of danger of collapse and are not yet abgerrissen. Others are already in the reconstruction, but this seems to be slow going, because so many people have left the city for fear of another earthquake and are attracted elsewhere.

Re:START christchurch

Honestly I could in this environment does not really enjoy my lunch snack. It's scary how much damage can cause earthquakes and very understandable that the center was almost deserted and many people have moved away. I hope that the reconstruction is worth and have the rest of the population with the erdbebensichenen buildings a calmer future.

Otago Peninsula - around Dunedin

Dunedin and the Otago South Island New Zealand Halbinselauf the are known for unique wildlife. Here, albatrosses, sea lions, seals and penguins frolic.

On an afternoon tour in bright sunshine but I had strong winds lucky enough to see all of the animals. First we went to the lookout point at which the albatrosses have a wingspan of 3 m and fly to Chile or to spend several months at sea.

Then we went back and forth across the Otago Peninsula, past a picturesque landscapes and lagoons are a paradise for birds such as black swans. Reached the end, the evening will come back to the beach where the penguins from fishing to their nests.

Die Milford Sound Cruise

The Milford Track was actually originally to have from Te Anau a way to access to the sea. There, after my 4-day hike arrived, I took advantage of the radiantly beautiful weather to take a boat trip through the fjord until the Tasmanian Sea. On the slopes here is growing temperate rain forest, which is characterized by unknown for us very beautiful tall trees.

There are different providers have almost all the same price, have the largest boats Real Journeys. After the strenuous hike it was very nice to just sit back the 1.5 hours and to enjoy the scenery from the seats. Not to speak of the free filter coffee after sooo long Nescafe!

Also, one should plan well what you keep on catering entrains to the weight of the backpack as low as possible. For more information on planning finds its here.

With 7-9 meters (!) Of rain per year in the Fiordland National Park to be reckoned with bad weather actually already.
